On a hot and humid August weekend with heat indexes over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, seventeen competitors from fourteen Oklahoma communities and one competitor from Texas came to the firing line to compete in the 2009 Oklahoma Outdoor State National Match Course Pistol Championship. An additional seven competitors from five Oklahoma communities joined the competitive field for the 30-round Civilian Marksmanship Program Excellence-in-Competition Service Pistol Leg Match. Additionally, a 30-round NRA Distinguished Revolver Match was held in conjunction with this State Championship event. Team Matches were also held in the .22 caliber, Center Fire, and .45 caliber categories as well as in the Service Pistol and NRA Center Fire Revolver categories.

 

When the dust had settled, David Howland of China Spring, Texas had fired the winning score of 2577-89x and was presented with the Oklahoma Rifle Association State Championship Match Winner Trophy. David used a Buddy Chapman accurized .22 caliber Ruger Mark II with Eley Sport ammunition and a Clark 6" Long Slide 1911A1. In addition to his overall win, he also won the Center Fire and .45 caliber Sub-Aggregate matches with scores of 847-26x and 862-28x, respectively.

 

Richard Chadwick of Davis, Oklahoma claimed First Place in the Master Class by firing a 2507-63x while using a Marvel Conversion with Eley Club ammunition in the .22 matches and a Buddy Chapman accurized 1911A1 for both the Center Fire and .45 caliber matches. Master Class Shooters, Charles W. Abston of Jones, Oklahoma and Darrell L. Brooks of Washington, Oklahoma, claimed the High Senior and High Grand Senior awards, respectively, with scores of 2455-59x and 2356-43x.

 

In the combined Expert / Sharpshooter Class, Ronald L. Doggett of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma fired a score of 2532-75x for First Place and was also the recipient of the award for the High Oklahoma Resident Competitor. En route, Ron also won the .22 caliber Sub-Aggregate match with a score of 874-27x. Ron used a Marvel Conversion with Aguila SE .22 caliber ammo and a self-accurized 1911A1 utilizing a Les Baer slide and frame to produce his winning scores. Ben W. Randall of Davis, Oklahoma and Young B. Chang of Stillwater, Oklahoma claimed Second and Third in the combined Expert / Sharpshooter Class with scores of 2496-54x and 2490-56x, respectively.

 

Mark A. Oak of Edmond, Oklahoma took First Place honors in the Marksman Class. He used a Marvel Conversion in the .22 caliber matches and a Jim Robertson-accurized 1911A1 Service Pistol with Service Pistol Reloads based on the ZERO 230 grain FMJRN bullet to fire his winning score of 2338-54x.

 

The Civilian Marksmanship Program Excellence-in-Competition Service Pistol Leg Match was won by newly Distinguished Shooter Ronald L. Doggett. He used his 1911A1 Service Pistol to shoot a score of 272-10x and was awarded a First Place Blue Ribbon and a CMP Pin. Receiving the Second Place Red Ribbon and a CMP Pin was Charles W. Abston. Already Distinguished, Charles used his 1911A1 Service Pistol to fire a score of 272-3x. Ben W. Randall, who is also Distinguished, used his 1911A1 Service Pistol to fire a score of 261-6x for the Third Place White Ribbon and a CMP Pin. In fourth place overall, the first place non-distinguished competitor and recipient of 6 points towards the award of the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge was Richard L. Wise of Yukon, Oklahoma who used his 1911A1 Service Pistol to shoot a score of 260-0x.

 

In the NRA Distinguished Revolver Match, Darrell L. Brooks shot a score of 264-7x for the First Place Blue Ribbon and a Revolver Pin using a Smith and Wesson Model 14-5 revolver and Magtech ammunition; his performance earned him 6 points toward the NRA Distinguished Revolver Badge. Larry Kent Stonecipher, who has already earned the NRA Distinguished Revolver Badge, fired a score of 259-4x using a Smith and Wesson K38 revolver and Magtech 158 grain Lead Round Nose ammunition for the Second Place Red Ribbon and a Revolver Pin. Using a Ruger Model GP-100 with a 6" barrel and Magtech 158 Lead Round Nose ammunition, Charles P. Meloy fired a score of 256-2x to take the Third Place White Ribbon and a Revolver Pin.

 

In the Team Matches, the Okie North-South Team consisting of Charles W. Abston, Ronald L. Doggett, Richard W. Chadwick, and Ben W. Randall swept the field with winning scores in the .22, CF, .45, NRA Aggregate, and Service Pistol Team Matches. In the Revolver Team Matches, Team Brooks (consisting of Darrell L. Brooks, Charles P. Meloy, and Larry Kent Stonecipher) defeated Team Chadwick (consisting of Richard W. Chadwick, Ronald L. Doggett, and Ben W. Randall) in a tightly contested match with a score for Team Brooks of 756-12x over Team Chadwick’s score of 751-11x.

 

A team made up of the ten high scoring Oklahoma state resident competitors from the .22 caliber National Match Course of the State Outdoor Pistol Championship comprises the Oklahoma State Pistol Team for the NRA State Team Pistol Postal Match. Scores fired from each state team are forwarded to the NRA who makes the final determination as to standing and the awarding of National Pistol Postal Awards. This year’s Oklahoma Team consists of the following competitiors: Ronald L. Doggett (290-12x), Charles W. Abston (287-8x), Richard W. Chadwick (285-6x), Darrell L. Brooks (284-7x), Jack H. Oak (284-5x), Richard L. Wise (279-4x), Ben W. Randall (278-7x), Young B. Chang (278-5x), Thomas P. Reardon (276-3x), and David Chang (274-6x). The Team’s Total Score was 2815-63x

 

Also selected at the State Outdoor Pistol Championship is the Governor’s Ten consisting of the top ten scoring Oklahoma state resident competitors in the overall championship match. This year’s selectees are: Ronald L. Doggett (2532-75x), Richard W. Chadwick (2507-63x), Ben W. Randall (2496-54x), Young B. Chang (2490-56x), Thomas P. Reardon (2473-57x), Larry Kent Stonecipher (2461-51x), Charles W. Abston (2455-59x), David Chang (2434-60x), Richard L. Wise (2395-37x), and Darrell L. Brooks (2356-43x). Each selected competitor will receive a commemorative Governor’s Ten brassard.

 

Four special merchandise awards each consisting of a brick of 500 rounds of Aguila SE .22 caliber ammunition, were made to the Overall Match Winner and the First Place Winners in the Master, the combined Expert / Sharpshooter, and the Marksman Classes. Additionally, the Second and Third Place finishers in the combined Expert / Sharpshooter Class received 350 and 250 rounds of Aguila SE .22 caliber ammunition, respectively. In the team matches, the winner of the NRA Aggregate combining .22, CF, and .45 team scores received 400 rounds of Aguila SE .22 caliber ammunition and the winner of the Revolver Team Match received 200 rounds of Aguila SE .22 caliber ammunition. Over $1550.00 of donated door prizes and merchandise from Gun World of Del City, OK and the Bullseye Pistol Division of the Oklahoma City Gun Club were distributed to competitors and match workers at the BBQ and Awards Ceremony following the fired matches. Additionally, each competitor and match worker received a 2009 Oklahoma Rifle Association State Championship Souvenir Pin.
