            On a late season Indian Summer weekend, pleasant conditions prevailed in Arcadia, Oklahoma for the 2011 Oklahoma NRA Short Course Pistol State Championship. Sixteen competitors from Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas came together to compete in the 270-round Short Course Pistol State Championship as well as in 5 separate 30-round team matches. An additional seven competitors joined the competitive field for the 30-round Civilian Marksmanship Program Excellence-in-Competition Service Pistol Leg Match. Additionally, a 30-round NRA Distinguished Revolver Match was held in conjunction with this event. 

            Master Class shooter Ronald L. Doggett of Oklahoma City fired a 2566-70 to win the Oklahoma Rifle Association State Championship Match Winner Trophy and the High Oklahoma Resident Trophy; he also received a $25.00 Gift Certificate from Academy Sports and Outdoors. In addition to his winning Grand Aggregate score, he also won the .22 caliber, Center Fire, and .45 caliber Sub-Aggregate matches with scores of 869-23, 847-20, and 850-27, respectively.

            In the combined Master/Expert Class, Expert Class shooter David A. Nichols of Salina, Kansas took the First Place Award with a 2485-55; in Second Place with a score of 2476-66, Darrell L. Brooks, Sr. of Washington, Oklahoma also won the High Grand Senior Trophy. Firing a score of 2438-50, Richard L Wise of Yukon, Oklahoma, took the First Place award in the Sharpshooter Class, while fellow Sharpshooter Robert Jensen of Oklahoma City received the High Senior Trophy for his score of 2347-29. The First Place award in the Marksman Class went to Brad T. Wells of Meeker, Oklahoma for his score of 2285-26, as fellow Marksman Therese A. Booth of Oklahoma City won the High Woman Trophy with a score of 1306-5.

            Awards for the Individual Matches were presented at the Saturday afternoon Awards Ceremony and Dinner where competitors and match workers dined on BBQ from Spencer’s Smokehouse & Barbeque of Midwest City, Oklahoma.

            In the 4-Member NRA Team Matches, which were fired on Sunday, the Oklahoma Wise Guys (Ronald L. Doggett, Ben W. Randall, Richard L. Wise, and Robert Jensen) swept the field by winning the .22 caliber, Center Fire, and .45 caliber team matches as well as the Grand Aggregate for those matches with scores of 1079-17, 1059-23, 1100-23, and 3238-63, respectively. Additionally, the Oklahoma Wise Ones (Charles W. Abston, Darrell L. Brooks, Sr., Charles P. Meloy, and Jack H. Oak) set three pending new National Records in the Grand Senior Category for the .22 caliber, Center Fire, and .45 caliber NRA Short Course 4-Member Team Matches with scores of 1078-21, 984-12, and 1052-18, respectively. Also, for the first time, the Oklahoma City Gun Club fielded a Women’s Team consisting of Salli S. Wandke, Connie Roberts, Therese A. Booth, and Melanie D. Weaver firing a combined score of 2152-13. The 4-Member Service Pistol Team Match was contested between the Oklahoma Wise Guys and the Oklahoma Wise Ones, with the Wise Guys winning with a score of 1052-20 to 1013-13. The 2-Member Revolver Team Match was contested between three teams: The Winners (Doggett and Randall), the Bradi Bunch (Meloy and Wells), and the Territorial Rangers (Wise and Jensen). When the smoke had settled, The Winners had won with a score of 484-03, followed by the Bradi Bunch with 455-3, and the Territorial Rangers with 453-3.

            All of the competitors in the Civilian Marksmanship Program Excellence-in-Competition Service Pistol “Leg” Match used the venerable .45 caliber 1911 Service Pistol. Four Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge holders contended for the top three spots with Ronald L. Doggett’s winning score of 275-6 earning him a First Place Blue Ribbon and a CMP Pin. Darrell L. Brooks, Sr., shot a score of 273-3 earning him a Second Place Red Ribbon and a CMP Pin, while Charles W. Abston of Jones, Oklahoma shot a score of 267-4 to secure the Third Place White Ribbon and a CMP Pin. In Fourth Place overall and in First Place amongst the Non-Distinguished Competitors was Charles P. Meloy of Noble, Oklahoma shooting a score of 258-3 to earn an additional 6 points towards the 30 points that are required for the award of the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge. With the points that he earned in this match, he now has 26 of the 30 required for the award of the Badge. Charles is the newly elected Division Chairman for the Bullseye Pistol Division of the Oklahoma City Gun Club.

            In the Distinguished Revolver Match, Ronald L. Doggett used his Taurus Model 66 to shoot a score of 264-5 and secure the First Place Blue Ribbon and a Revolver Pin; his performance has earned him 8 more points towards the NRA Distinguished Revolver Badge - - he now has a total of 20 of the 30 points required to earn that award. Richard L. Wise used a Smith and Wesson Model 19 to shoot a score of 249-2 and earn his initial 6 points towards the NRA Distinguished Revolver Badge; he was awarded the Second Place Red Ribbon and a Revolver Pin. Charles P. Meloy of Noble, Oklahoma fired a score of 247-2 to take the Third Place White Ribbon and a Revolver Pin.

            A special thanks goes out to the many competitors who temporarily loaned firearms and/or ammunition to the Line Safety Officers and match workers so that they could compete in the Civilian Marksmanship Program Excellence-in-Competition Service Pistol “Leg” Match and the NRA Distinguished Revolver Match. A very special thanks also goes out to H and H Gun Range, Heartland Outdoors, and Academy Sports and Outdoors for their very generous support of our awards and door prize programs. Additionally, H and H Gun Range provided several cases of bottled water for use by competitors and match workers.

Nelson O. Wood of Edmond, OK and Janice M. Meloy of Noble, OK served as Chief Range Officer and Chief Statistical Officer, respectively. Additionally, the following individuals served as Line Safety Officers and match workers: Daniel A. Baily, Kenneth G. Smart, Dale Flowers, Joey Dean, Harold Kenny McDonald, Dorsey T. Roach, Jr., Jeffrey C. Redding, and Olga Nikolaeva. Competitors and match workers who took their Sunday lunch break at the Arcadia, Oklahoma Subway Sandwich Shop received a complementary discount. All competitors and match workers also received an Osage Shield souvenir pin from the Bullseye Pistol Division of the Oklahoma City Gun Club as well as Range Passes from H and H Gun Range and Heartland Outdoors.
