Sporting Rifle -- The Basics

Sporting Rifle is a great introductory discipline to the High Power Rifle shooting sports and an excellent way to develop your shooting skills and earn an NRA Classification.  The 320 point course of fire is conducted at the 200 yard line in three positions and four stages:  Prone Slow Fire, Standing Slow Fire, Sitting or Kneeling Rapid Fire, and Prone Rapid Fire.

In the slow fire stages, the competitor is given two sighting shots and eight shots for record for a total of 80 points in a ten minute time limit.  Targets are pulled and marked by pit personnel after each shot.

In the rapid fire events, the competitor is again given two sighting shots which are marked after each shot.  After the sighters, the command to load is given, wherein the competitor loads 4 rounds which is shot in a 30 second time limit.  Targets are pulled when the 30 second time limit expires. The string of 4 shots is then repeated for a stage total of 80 points, after which the targets are scored and marked.

What you need to compete:
-  A Center fire rifle of not more then 35 caliber, not more than 9.5 pounds including the sights, capable of holding 4 rounds of ammunition. Schuetzen type buttplates and muzzle breaks are not authorized.
- Binoculars or a spotting scope to evaluate sighting shots and scoring targets from the firing line.
- A 3x6ft piece of carpet or shooting mat to protect you from the goat heads and burrs as well as wet grass.
- A rifle sling is recommended to assist in building a strong position.
- Eye and ear protection (per the OKCGC rules).

Competitors will take turns shooting, scoring and pulling pit detail.
