This two-hour course is for the beginning shooter as well as anyone who would like to learn the fundamentals of cleaning and maintaining their handgun. This course provides a safe and comfortable environment to learn the fundamentals of handgun cleaning under the directions of an experienced instructor. The course will cover the basic equipment needed to clean and maintain a handgun. How to properly clean both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. In additions, the students will learn what services that should be referred to a qualified gunsmith. The successful completion of this course is achieved when the participant has completed all the practical tasks to the satisfaction of the instructor(s).  Students will provide their own handgun and cleaning supplies for the class. No live ammunition is allowed in the classroom.

Learning Objective:

  • Identify the basic equipment needed to clean/maintain a firearm.
  • Identify how to properly clean both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers.
  • Identify what services should be referred to a qualified gunsmith.


Pre-requisites: At least 18 years old

Time: 2 hours classroom

Equipment needed:

  • Functional handgun, either semi-auto or revolver. Students can chose their own caliber depending on their handgun. Popular ones are .22, 9mm, .380, .45ACP, 40 S&W, or .38 Special
  • Owner’s manual for handgun
  • Case or gun bag for transporting pistol
  • Eye protection and disposable gloves
  • Gun cleaning equipment; gun oil, gun cleaner, caliber specific cleaning rod and jigs, clean rags, caliber specific cleaning patches, small flashlight, any tools recommended in owner’s manual (i.e., small screwdriver, etc.), and cleaning mat to put on table.


No live ammunition allowed in the classroom.
